With industry experts predicting an extreme shortage of skilled workers in the cyber defense fields by 2022, the opportunity for women to enter the field is growing larger every day. Now is the perfect time for women to close the gender gap that exists in the cyber security world and fill roles that male counterparts cannot.  This would not be the first time in the history that women stepped up to fill necessary job functions.

Consider the jobs explosion during World War II when American military men shipped off to Europe to defeat the Germans. Women stepped in to fill critical factory roles to keep the war efforts equipped with everything from uniforms, to ammunition to planes. But it didn’t stop there, women filled multiple roles that kept the home fires burning strong, too. Women served in the armed forces, learned how to fix cars, worked in offices and farms. Many local economies remained active because women stepped into roles left vacant by men serving in the military. In 1944, nearly 38% of all American adult women were employed outside their homes and the female labor force grew by 50% overall.

Today, we are also at war, but the adversary is much different and perhaps more difficult. The modern adversary is smart and knows that cyber defenses worldwide are understaffed. Cyber thieves are banking on the fact that cyber jobs are going unfilled. The rate at which a hacker deploys a new scheme is nearly 4 times faster than a cyber defense worker can be deployed to thwart it. Currently, only 11% of cyber security workers are women so the opportunities for closing the gender gap is quite large. Remember last month when I noted that by 2022, an estimated 1.8 million jobs will be left unfilled? Imagine if those roes were filled with women entering the cyber work force either with college degrees or industry certifications in hand.

What can women bring to the cyber table? First, diversity. Bringing a woman’s perspective to the table brings different viewpoints of business, process and leadership. Diversity is simply good for business.  Cyber criminals have disparate backgrounds and experience, so the wider variety of people and experience we have defending our businesses and networks, the better the chances of success. Second, with a recent push at high school and college levels to bolster enrollment and break down gender stereotypes, women are entering STEM fields more than ever before. The pool of talent is growing deeper every day.

The same explosion of female workers we witnessed during World War II can happen again in the cyber world today. Wouldn’t it be great to see a 50% increase in female workers again? I think so.

A recent article in Cybersecurity Ventures suggests that every IT position today is also a cyber security position. This could not be truer in a digital world where data breaches are all too common and the skills gap among IT workers widens.  According to some analysts, as many as 1.8 million cyber and tech jobs could be left unfilled by 2022 because of a lack of qualified workers.

What is the answer?

Training and certification.

It is estimated that 41% of IT professionals hold an average of three (3) industry certifications and even more are seeking to add more skills to their resume each day. Juggling daily duties with learning time is a constant challenge. Finding the right learning modality is critical to success.

Instructor led training (ILT) is accepted as the most comprehensive method offered to obtain and sharpen cyber skills. Complex issues are shaped in the classroom in hands on environments where a student is fully engaged in the learning process.  An alternative to ILT is the virtual delivery where the instructor is live but reaching students via tele-presence technologies. Both ILT and vILT immerse the learner in the subject matter for the fullest learning experience.

e-learning or On-Demand Classrooms (ODC) are viewed as cost effective and more convenient when it comes to bolstering specific IT skills. ODC is viewed as an alternative for shrinking budgets but is also known to fall short of providing the full training experience becuase the student misses the interaction with a live instructor.  Dedication of the students to absorb and apply skills offered determines overall ODC success. Still, ODC can help fill skills gaps in the IT world and should be considered critical to bolstering skills.

RSA University offers all three learning modalities with over 200 course offerings currently in Associate and Professional certification tracks.  Each RSA product features a recommended learning path, exam guide and Practice Test to help prepare students for certification. After completing the courses in a learning path and acquiring professional experience with the product of choice, students can schedule time to take an exam at a local testing center through Pearson VUE, our vendor for proctored exam administration.

EC-Council and RSA Security announce partnership

EC-Council and RSA Security have teamed up to offer EC-Council certification and training programs to RSA Security's vast range of clients, partners and employees

EC-Council and RSA Security have partnered to offer information security skills-based training to professionals globally. The deal was constructed to allow RSA to offer EC-Council courses to RSA clients and partners to address the widening gap between the skills required by corporations to fend off cyber-attacks and the labor pool.

Companies of all sizes are struggling to hire qualified network defenders and security analysts who are integral to staffing their SOCs and to keeping their infrastructure and data secure. EC-Council’s line up of certification programs are tailored to prepare the kind of professional that corporations need to reduce risk and ensure both security and compliance.

RSA will be offering EC-Council training and certification programs including for example Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Computer Hacking Forensics Investigator (CHFI), Certified Network Defender (CND), EC-Council Certified Security Analyst (ECSA), EC-Council Certified Incident Handler (ECIH), Certified CISO (CCISO). Students will be able to choose from a variety of modes of learning including live online (virtual) and live in-person. Along with the programs themselves, and the opportunity to earn a new certification with each, is the cloud-based cyber range where students develop their tactical cybersecurity skills. This hands-on tool provides students with an opportunity to apply the program concepts to real world scenarios.

According to Lisa J. Zeena, Sr. Director, RSA University, “With the growing cybersecurity skills gap, companies (in both public and private sectors) looking to recruit personnel with the required expertise to protect sensitive company information are extremely challenged. The partnership between EC-Council and RSA helps address this challenge by offering the necessary skills-based training using state-of-the-art solutions to manage digital risk.”

With the escalation in cyber threats globally, organizations now recognize that an investment in security is a must. Hundreds of thousands of cybersecurity positions are unfilled in the US alone due to a shortage of cybersecurity experts. The partnership between EC-Council and RSA addresses the need to provide the required training, skills, and experience to address the cybersecurity skills gap.

“In a digital world where everything is at risk of being compromised, it is critical that we produce world class cyber security talent to help curb the manifestation of "cyber insecurity” in large organizations. EC-Council's partnership with RSA is a testament to the collective commitment of both organizations to bring high quality "hands-on" cyber security training into the heart of global institutions. This exciting alignment of RSA and EC-Council cyber training will result in a scalable approach in creating world class cybersecurity teams with the hands-on skills and ability to perform their job duties from day one.” Jay Bavisi, CEO, EC-Council Group and Chairman of the Board, EC-Council University

RSA Education Services Practice Lead - Archer and Identity Suites

Veterans Day is a day in which we honor United States veterans and victims of all wars.  It’s a day where many of us take the time to say thank you to anyone who has ever served in the US Armed Forces.  It’s also a day where many US military members take a moment to reflect back on their time in service and think about the brave men and women who battled next to them, some of whom are tragically no longer with us but their legacy lives on.  I’m proud to be a veteran, and in the most sincere way possible, thank you to all of the veterans out there.

RSA Global Services employs a large amount of veterans from all branches of the military.  Many of our employees still serve in the Guard, Reserves and have been called back to Active Duty for deployments.  This Veteran’s Day is a special day for RSA Global Services.  We’ve made a decision to give back to those who served.  We are offering exam vouchers for any of our product certifications, at no cost, for any United States veteran.

RSA has a product certification program for the RSA Archer Suite, RSA NetWitness Platform and RSA SecurID Suite.  The product certification training itself remains for-fee, but with this announcement the $150 certification exam will now be free for US veterans.  This will be ideal for any veterans who are customers or users of RSA products who may already be familiar enough to pass the certification exams or for those who already took the product training and would like to take the certification.

The process for a US veteran to request a free product certification voucher is simple. The two steps required are shown below:

  1. Go to our product certification page to view our available certifications, find the one that is right for you, review and complete the recommended training (if applicable), and complete the practice tests. Once you feel you are ready to proceed with taking the exam, proceed to step two.
  2. Open a case with the RSA University support team to request your free exam voucher.
  3. RSA University will issue you the exam voucher which you can then use in your checkout process while scheduling the exam.

While this offer is currently only valid for those who have served in the US Armed Forces, we sincerely thank everyone who has served their country as well as their families.  On behalf of RSA Global Services, we wish everyone a very happy and safe Veterans Day.

With today’s ever growing threat landscape, the volume, sophistication, and potential damages of attacks is increasing. It is becoming increasingly harder to stop attackers from entering your system networks, isolating their motives, and most importantly removing them once they are there.  A typical security environment uses multiple disconnected technologies, supplying an immense amount of information.  Prioritizing a specific piece of data is important to responding quickly to attacks.  At a higher level, however, there is a need to understand if the security strategy is really effective for the business.  In summation, businesses need to change their security strategies.

The solution?  RSA provides a top down approach strategically linking business risk management with security events and priorities

  • Make security teams operationally more impactful
  • Strategically manage business risk

By bringing different practices together, linking security incidents with business context allows security teams to respond faster to protect what matters most.

The RSA suite of tools

  • Keeps the bad actors out, but allows entry to those that have legitimate need to easily access the system
  • Enables visibility and analytics to view the big picture to provide insights into specific attacks
  • Provides business context linked to contextual intelligence for a more informed approach
  • which can then be translated into action

The video in this eLearning discusses how RSA’s tools provide both the detailed information linked to the business context to protect the most sensitive assets.

RSA University is pleased to release RSA NetWitness Endpoint Foundations as an On-Demand Classroom. This video-based course serves as a general introduction to RSA NetWitness Endpoint for analysts and anyone else who uses or supports this tool. Video-based lectures comprise half the course, and is supported by hands-on access to a live RSA NetWitness Endpoint deployment and structured lab activities in the virtual lab.

As with all our On-Demand Classrooms, students have access to the same content delivered in class, including lab materials, without the expense and time required to travel to an in-person classroom. To find out more about RSA University On-Demand Classrooms and our other offerings, RSA Link.
