Applies ToRSA Product Set: SecurID
RSA Product/Service Type: Authentication Manager
RSA Version/Condition: 7.1
IssueThis article provides information on how to write an RSA Authentication Manager 7.1 SMS plug-in
CauseThe first versions of the product shipped enabled to use the Clickatell SMS service (see http://www.clickatell.com/rsa/securid.php).  This is a connection to a transmission service which runs over HTTPS  (HTTP over SSL).  In some instances, there may be a requirement to use a different provider system or a different protocol, for example SMPP or SMAP.
ResolutionWith the introduction of Authentication Manager 7.1 SP4 in December 2010, this has been extended to allow configurable connections to other vendors via a generic HTTP plug-in.  The Clickatell option is still available with  a simple GUI to enter specific values or a more generic interface can be used to map sending SMS messages to most HTTP SMS aggregator interfaces.  See the article on Configuring On-Demand over HTTP for samples of how to use the GUI to connect to a variety of SMS aggregator services.

In addition, RSA Professional Services has experience is designing and supplying SMS plug-ins for RSA Authentication Manager and may be engaged to assist in building additional plug-ins as required.  At present, the following plug-in types have been built and supplied for customers.

SMPP v3.3/3.4

Short Message Peer to Peer protocol is an open, industry standard messaging protocol

SMAP v1.0

Short Message Application Part which is a set of abstract XML operations specifically designed for short messaging

File

A simple demonstration plug-in which writes the SMS message to a file which a unique name

HTTP

A plug-in which transmits the configurable set of credentials and message as simple CGI parameters as part of an HTTP GET or PUT operation

The HTTP plug-in should generally be considered superseded by the facilities in SP4, but may still be useful in circumstances where customization or specialized usage is required.

The inclusion of SMPP support as a standard feature of the shipping product is currently being considered as an enhancement for Authentication Manager 7.1.  Customers interested in this longer term solution should contact their sales representatives to express their interest.

In addition to the packaged code additional options have also been used:

CMPP

Short Message Peer to Peer protocol is an open, industry standard messaging protocol

TCP

Short Message Application Part which is a set of abstract XML operations specifically designed for short messaging

JMS

A simple demonstration plug-in which writes the SMS message to a file which a unique name

These three are not packaged and either require additional work for completion or need specific coding to be implemented into a customized environment.
