Applies ToAffected Versions: 3.5.X; 3.0.X
ResolutionNote: The RMAN backup has been depreciated in versions 3.6 and above.
Check to see that the Oracle RMAN tool is being called and not the reverse man page compiler (rman). In this situation we found that the path was set as:

$ echo $PATH

/usr/bin/jdk1.5.0_06/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/bin/j

dk1.5.0_06/bin/://bin:/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/bin:/u01/app/oracle/pr oduct/10.2.0/db_1/OPatch

The X111R6/bin was in front of (before) the oracle directory in the PATH so the AVDB_Backup.sh was picking up the /usr/X11R6/bin/rman command (reverse compile man pages) and not the Oracle rman utility
Doing a "which rman" showed the incorrect executable was being used by the script.
To resolve this issue:
1. Edit the /home/oracle/.bash_profile
2. In the PATH variable
Move the /usr/X11R6/bin string to the end of the path
3. Save and exit the file
4. Retest the backup
