The architecture of modules in the Apache 1.3.x Web server on UNIX is to spawn many child processes to handle requests. Each child process has its own instance of the ClearTrust Web Agent which makes a TCP/IP connection to the backend servers. The extra overhead when this connection must use authenticated SSL causes severe performance problems.
