CVE IDCVE-2016-0270
Article SummaryUsing GCM with TLS requires the use of a nonce that must be unique for the connection to remain secure.  The TLS specification does not provide clear guidelines for choosing a unique nonce and an implementation that uses a nonce generation method that may result in a nonce being repeated could allow an attacker to recover the authentication key for the connection.
Alert ImpactNot Applicable
Technical DetailsFalse positive
Technical Details ExplanationSSL-J, like any implementation for AES-GCM, is vulnerable if the same nonce is reused.
In SSL-J, we provide an implementation of nonce generation which is FIPS 140-2 compliant.  The value is made up of two parts:
  • A counter, initialized on the current time
  • A hash of the current GCM object instance
The inclusion of the counter, initialized from the time the first time an IV is generated should prevent any reuse of a nonce with a key.
