IssueHow do I enable IPMI on Series 2 and Series 3 RSA NetWitness NextGen appliances?
Resolution

Series 2 Appliances:  IPMI was not included with Serial 2 appliances in general.  For S2 SuperMicro appliances, an IPMI riser card must be purchased. For S2 Dell appliances, an IPMI DRAC card must be purchased. It can then be plugged into the plastic insert of the appliance.  The exception is for S2 appliance: NWA1200-16DS, which is built with a IPMI card.

Series 3 Appliances:  Series 3 SuperMicro and Dell appliances (shipping since Oct 2010) have IPMI built-in.

Option 1: Using use IPMICFG utility. Please see the attached PDF document for S3 SuperMicro embedded IPMI interface description.

Option 2: Using ipmitool per the below steps.

1. Install the IPMI tool
yum install ipmitool

2. Once installed, check the IP that has been given to the IPMI
ipmitool lan print

3. If IPMI is configured with a connected IP address, simply type in that IP in a web browser.

Optional:
If the IP cannot be reached, manually configure it from CLI.

"ipmitool lan set" will print all available options.

Example:
ipmitool lan set 1 ipaddr 192.168.1.25
ipmitool lan set 1 netmask 255.255.255.0
ipmitool lan set 1 defgw ipaddr 192.168.1.1
ipmitool lan print  (to check the status)

4. Default (both username and password are case sensitive)
Username: ADMIN
Password: ADMIN

5. From here, now the appliance can be controlled remotely.

NotesOur S3 Dell's IPMI implementation is not a full implementation, but is rather a remote console.  It will go down if the Operating System is down, so it is not truly an iLO type interface. For true IPMI support on S3 Dell appliances, an IPMI DRAC card must be purchased.
