Clickable Multi-Levels of Cross Ref Fields Using Calculation
Solution: Bring Multi-Level Cross Ref Apps (e.g., Company, Division, Business Units) Down to One Level using calculated fields, all cross reference fields are clickable (hyperlink), without the help of data feeds.
This solution might help a lot of people. This resolves the limitation where in a cross reference field, you can only see one level up or one level down of cross ref field within the cross reference field. Confusing? Here is an example:
In the Enterprise Management solution there are Company (level 1), Division (level 2) and Business Units (level 3) as the business hierarchies. Then you have the Business Process application which references Business Units, now in the BU ref field, you want to see both the related division and company, and you want to be able to click into those records directly, you probably would go for a data feed approach, which is not ideal because it's not real time.
You can achieve this through a simple calculation. See below.
concatenate("<a href=""/GenericContent/Record.aspx?id=",REF([Division],[Tracking ID]),"&moduleId=<put your module ID here>"" target=""_blank"">",REF([Division],[Division]),"</a>")
So in your Division, you can pull the Company link, in your Business Unit you can pull the Division Link, AND the Company Link (all you need here is directly reference the Company Link calculated field you already created in Division). Now you have all the levels with clickable links down to one level. Just like how you would get them through a data feed, but it's real time! The calculation uses relative url so you won't need to change them when you migration through environments.
Now when you reference the Business Unit application in other applications, you can display all the 3 business hierarchies in one place. You can click on those business hierarchy records and they will open in a new window, so it won't confuse users, or get them lost in the drill ups/downs.
Hope this helps.
