NIC RSA enVision VMware Collector Service stops randomly
Hi All, I would like to know how to find when the service "NIC( RSA) enVision VMware Collector Service" stops, Is there any specific NIC messageID for VMware collector service , Also any thoughts on why service stops randomly ? are there any log files to check?
VMware collector service doesn't generates NIC messages like other collection services, so there is no specific NIC message id, but the service generates a debug log file(vimservice.log) that will have this information in it. You can find that file under E:\nic\<version>\<host-name>\vmware\.
By default the services generates only essential message, but you can increase the log level. To do that you have to edit the registry entry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Network Intelligence Corporation\VMware Collection\debugOptions". This already has a value ‘–l’ in it, just add ‘-d’ also to "debugOptions", this will increase the log level.
have you checked the Windows Event Log? It may show you that the service stopped and then you can just collect the events from the Windows OS and monitor that.
You can make a small registry change in:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Network Intelligence Corporation\VMware Collection jvmOptions
By default on a test machine - this entry reads:
If we append -Xrs to this value so that it reads:
-server -Xmx512m -Xrs
Then this resolves the issue.
-Xrs is a flag to tell the JVM not to halt on shutdown (which is what the service thinks is happening when you log out of a console session - for some crazy windows/java interaction reason).
After you apply this change on the collector of course, make sure that the service starts and stops if you try to restart it.
