Basic authentication should be fine, however, advanced options such as offline authentication or auto-registration may have issues (though I cannot name any I know of) and if so, we won't be able to troubleshoot it on an outdated and unsupported version of Authentication Manager. For best results with agent running on up-to-date versions of Windows, both offline and autoreg typically require updated code on the Authentication Manager to match the agent.

With Auto-Registration TCP port 5550 and Offline Days TCP port 5580 the 7.4.x Windows agent will try to use TLSv1.2 first, which the AM 7.1 server does not support, so you would probably need to enable TLSv1.1 in Windows on your 7.4.2 agent. Likewise the AM 7.1 server would probably be using RC4 ciphers, which the Windows agent might not allow. So you have to test this. But these problems might be, and only be with the TCP based protocols for Auto-Registration and Offline days, basic authentication on UDP 5500 should work.
Also test failover to replicas, which should include an Automatic Rebalance on the AM 7.1 Security Console, Access - Auth Agents - contact lists. If agent does not fail over to replica, download a new sdconf.rec after the rebalance.
Then start working on your plan to migrate / update to AM 8.x

As Steven Spicer mentioned yesterday in your question on the Authentication Agent API for Java 8.4 download, RSA Authentication Manager 7.1 SP4 has been out of support since December of 2014 (see the EOPS information for
RSA Authentication Manager Appliance 7.x / RSA SecurID® Appliance 3.x).
Updating to a supported version will be complicated and time-consuming, as you will need to install several intermediate versions. There is no direct update to RSA Authentication Manager 8.4. To move forward with an upgrade, we recommend talking with your local RSA sales representative to plan an engagement with RSA Professional Services in planning and executing the update.
Regards,
Erica
