RSA Token Life Extend

Jump to solution

Team could some one please help me with below query.

  • How long can we extend?  Does it takeover the full life of the un-assigned token or just a part of it?
  • What happens to the token we stole life from?
  • Can a token be extended more than once?
  • Does it depend when the token was imported or can all do this?
  • Does it cost any additional fees to do so?

How long can we extend?
-you can extend indefinitely until the ultimate terminate date which is Dec 31, 2035.

In some later version this terminate date might get pushed further out, but for the current

version, it is 12/31/2035.

Does it takeover the full life of the un-assigned token or just a part of it?

-the extended token inherits the full date of the token it is extended with

What happens to the token we stole life from?

-it gets deleted from the RSA server. It could be re-imported some time in the future using the original seed record, but otherwise it gets deleted, and it's serial number is tied to the token that is being extended by it. NOTE: you cannot re-import it if the serial number is still tied to an extended token, but if you just want to unassign the extended token, and get your new token back into the database as a 'normal unassigned token' you can import it again from it's original seed record.

Can a token be extended more than once?

-yes.

Does it depend when the token was imported or can all do this?

-any software token of any past expire date that was distributed from an 8.2 or higher AM server, and is still assigned to a userid can be extended. Have some old seeds from 2012, long expired ? You can import them, assign them, distribute them, and extend them with a non-expired token if you wanted to go through the trouble.

Does it cost any additional fees to do so.

-no cost, other than purchasing new software tokens that have current active dates, to extend old tokens you already have. There is no added cost, it is a built-in feature, and actually reduces administration 'cost' overhead of distributing tokens and user 'cost' of installing them.

HI Edward,

thanks a lot for quick reply, is there any KB from RSA on the Token extend.

I have some more questions could you please help.

  • How does the system choose which tokens life its taking?
  • If there situations in which we should we be manually choosing them?
    • Only tokens distributed in RSA Authentication Manager 8.2 or later can, do we know how many in our current environment can or can’t?
