I've added the images I want to use according to KB 000030266, and when I when I 'view' the email the images show up fine. However when they are actually received as emails in my inbox, the image just shows as a red X.
I also can only get results if I use the shortened url (as according to the document) like such
<img src="/aveksa/custom/images/"Image_Name" />
There is another discussion that suggests using the full pathname. This doesn't either.

What email client are you using?
If it's outlook, try the following:
In the body of the message, right click and choose View Source:
You will probably see something like this:
Check if you are able to access - https://yourdomain/aveksa/custom/images/mailHeader.jpg
One more thing, in some cases outlook can block images.
If you see a similar message, try to click on Download Pictures
