Install patches before upgrade

I am planning to upgrade from AM 8.2 to 8.4.

I understand that I need to follow this path to accomplish this: 8.2 > 8.2 SP1 > 8.3 > 8.4

My question is, do I need to install the latest patch for the current version, before upgrading to the next version?

In other words, do I need to install 8.2 patch 5, before upgrading to 8.2 SP1?  And then 8.2 SP1 patch 8 before upgrading to 8.3, etc.

Also, my installation is comprised of a primary and one replica instance.  While the upgrade for one instance is running, does the other instance service authentication requests, therefor providing zero downtime of services during an upgrade?

Thanks in advance.
