We are promoting one of our replica server to be primary. What is the process for backout if anything goes wrong during the promotion?
What type of promotion are you trying to perform ?
There are two promotion scenarios
Planned promotion : Promotion for maintenance,
Promotion for maintenance promotes a replica instance to a primary instance while the original primary instance is online and functioning.
Primary is dead, or not coming back, and you pick a replica to become the new primary. Afterward...the old primary, if it does come back at some point, is cut off from working with the rest of the servers ever again. It would need to be reinstalled as a new replica if you want it to be in use.
Promote a Replica Instance for Disaster Recovery
Promote a Replica Instance Using Promotion for Maintenance
-Should the instance be virtual machines, you can take a VM snapshot prior performing the promotion activity.
-RSA recommends to Back up the data on a regular basis in your current primary and save the backup file to a location outside of the appliance, such as a Network File System (NFS) or Windows shared folder to overcome critical situations where access to primary is completely lost and the server is unable to restore back functional.
Should things go wrong during the promotion activity, virtual instances can be restored to snapshot. Should you have a database backup, you can spin a new RSA instance and patch it to the appropriate version of the backup file you hold, and restore from backup.
