Issue
Is Oracle Statspack needed if you have an AWR license?
Resolution
Usage of Statspack depends on the performance statistics that you want to collect. Statspack can be configured to report the same data as an AWR, however, analyzing the reports is easier with an AWR. With Statspack, you have to do the work yourself.
The AWR reports on more up-to-date information than Statspack and in more detail. The AWR works in conjunction with the Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM) to do the performance analysis for you, and can self-manage the data capture/purge. In addition, the AWR can be viewed and managed using the Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) user interface.
Additional information collected by Statspack and not the AWR:
- Event Histogram
- File Histogram
- Streams related data capture
- Active Session History (ASH)
- Service Statistics
- Metric Statistics
- Tablespace usage
To install Oracle Statspack, See the RSA Identity Governance & Lifecycle Database Setup and Management Guide, Chapter 2 Set Up the Database for information about Installing Oracle Statspack.
Generating an AWR report requires licensing to use the Oracle Diagnostics Pack. Customers using a customer-supplied database with RSA Identity Governance & Lifecycle should refer to their DBA team to verify the ability to generate AWR. Customers using an RSA-provided database with RSA Identity Governance & Lifecycle must generate a database performance statistics report, an alternative to AWR, for troubleshooting database performance issues.
