Issue
Error: "Unable to install the certificate. Error code: 80004005" ; certificate renewal fails for encryption certificate to ActivCard Gold Smart Card
Cause
During the renewal process, the user authenticates to the renewal server by using their authentication certificate, but the encryption certificate has not been registered into the current browser. As the renewal process completes, the system attempts to replace a certificate that does not exist and generates the error message.
Resolution
Before proceeding with a renewal process, ensure that the ActivCard Gold utilities have been used to register the stored certificates into the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser by using the menu option "Tools / Register Certificates..."

Workaround
The Authentication certificate is marked a default in ActivCard Gold
The encryption certificate is being renewed
