Issue
A Dell-based or Intel-based RSA SecurID A250 hardware appliance is stuck during boot with the following error message:
Memory/Battery problems were detected.
The adapter has recovered, but cached data was lost. Press any key to continue.
The following error is similar:
Cache data was lost, but the controller has recovered. This could be due to the fact
that your controller had protected cache after an unexpected power loss and your
system was without power longer than the battery backup time.
Press any key to continue or 'C' to load the configuration utility.
Cause
This error is not related to the system memory (RAM); instead it is related to the RAID controller's cache memory and/or battery.
There can be more than one cause for such message. For example,
- The adapter detects data in the controller cache that has not yet been written to the disk subsystem.
- The controller detects an Error-Correcting Code (ECC) error while performing its cache checking routine during initialization.
- The controller discards the cache rather than sending it to the disk subsystem because the data integrity cannot be guaranteed.
- The battery may be undercharged.
Resolution
It is safe to press any key to continue. The system completes the boot process without issue. Allow the battery at least 30 to 60 minutes to charge.
If there is an issue with every reboot, collect the RAID logs using the steps in
000037640 - How to collect RAID logs using Intel RAID CmdTool2. When you have the logs, contact
RSA Customer Support.
Notes
RAID controllers have cache memory modules to speed up read/write operations. These cache memory modules are volatile RAM, so if power is lost, data is lost. The cache module is backed up using a battery module that provides power to the cache module if there is power loss. This keeps the data safe until the appliance is back on and the data can be moved from the cache module to the disks.
