Microsoft Windows 2003 Server
The slow loading of RSAgina on XP machines can be caused by the contents in prefetch folder and a corresponding prefetch setting on the Windows XP installation.
Each time you turn on your computer, Windows keeps track of the way your computer starts and which programs you commonly open. Windows saves this information as a number of small files in the prefetch folder. The next time you turn on your computer, Windows refers to these files to help speed the start process.
The prefetch folder is a subfolder of the Windows System folder. If you empty the folder, Windows and your programs may take longer to open the next time you turn on your computer.
The default setting of prefetch folder is '3' on Windows XP machines.
1. Start --> run ---> regedit ---> Navigate to the following key :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters
Under this key you should see a value named: EnablePrefetcher
It has 4 possible values:
0 - Disabled : The prefetch system is turned off.
1 - Application : The prefetch only caches applications.
2 - Boot : The prefetch only caches boot system files.
3 - All : The prefetch caches boot, and application files.
We don't want to disable the feature entirely because this would actually make boot times longer, as this feature exists to speed up the loading of boot files. Thus we elect to use the value of '2' in this registry key. It allows us to keep the advantage of caching system files, without continually clogging the system up with applications.
2. Set the value to 2 and reboot.
The first reboot may seem slower, however subsequent startups will boot much faster. Remember, the resultant side-effect of setting the prefetch value to '2' (as above) is that launching individual applications will now be slightly slower.
3. Open a file explorer window and browse to the Windows folder (e.g. C:\Windows). There, you should see the prefetch folder. Open this folder and delete all of the files.
Note : the foldername should look like this c:\windows\prefetch.
4. Restart the machine.
You will notice that the RSAGina appears immediately and the prefetch folder will be re-populated with files. As thisfolder is self-maintaining, there is no need to delete it or empty its contents each time you reboot.
